POSTNATAL RECOVERY YOGA

MINDING EACH MOMENT

  POSTNATAL YOGA for WELLNESS

Why Do Yoga for Postnatal Recovery?

Postnatal yoga demonstrates the wonder of how your body can transform and restore itself. The postnatal yoga practices focus on ‘closing the body’; supporting the muscles to gently knit back together; returning the body to optimal alignment, stabilising the pelvis and reconditioning the core muscles.

This is so important for long term physical health and wellbeing, as unaddressed muscle weaknesses and imbalances can contribute to things like pelvic floor dysfunction, and hip pain months or even years down the road.  During pregnancy your body took it’s time making space for your growing baby; and so too it takes time for it to all come back together. The gentle yet strong focus of these postnatal Yogic-Pilates practices are the perfect preparation for a planned return to stronger yoga practices, pilates, running and other forms of exercise.

But it’s not just about your body, it can also give your mind the time and space to recover as well. Lack of sleep, shifting hormones and adjusting to a new kind of ‘normal’ can leave us mothers fatigued; and you may feel like you’re often walking around in a fog. During sessions I endeavour to offer you the opportunity to share the space with your baby, but to also have a bit of ‘you time’, where you can focus attention on self-care and restoration of both the mind and the body.

What to Expect at a
Postnatal Yoga Session

The postnatal yoga sessions are really all about caring for you the new mother. Babies are with you and cared for by you, however, the space and design of the sessions are such that the focus is on nurturing the mother. The sessions give you an opportunity to take care of you; to nurture and care for yourself – to heal the body and rest the mind, and to do this in the company of your baby.

The sessions are structured to ensure safe and sound re-toning of the whole body; building strength and stability of the core muscles, and the connecting and surrounding muscles so as to avoid long term problems of joint instability, weak pelvic floor and hypermobility. Emphasis is on ‘working in’ so that post recovery your body is in optimal condition to ‘work out’.

Each session builds on the last, with practices becoming progressively (and appropriately) stronger. Every woman will work at a level that is appropriate for their body. The aim is feeling you have more strength, tone and energy, have the ability relax easily when required, to feel good in your body, and (if your looking to get back to a fitness regime) to be in an ideal position to begin to return to your favourite exercise.

Suitable from 3 weeks post delivery for a vaginal birth, or from 6 weeks following a c-birth.  If you are unsure about your suitability please consult your GP, midwife or health visitor. You are also welcome to contact me if you have any questions about the practices.
